Future Dwelling

Initial Digital Model

This project was a collaboration with MOBIE (Ministry of Building Innovation and Education) to design co-operative housing in Heeley, Sheffield. The build is to be constructed using 'prefabricated pods' measuring 3m x 3m x 3m. The project includes groups of 3 with each student meeting individual briefs and requirements to design an individual house. However, each group is to work together to create cohesion between the 3 designs and have elements / facilities that are shared between the residents with aims of achieving sustainability within the designs.

My design plays with arranging the prefabricated modules and walls in a unique arrangement to create internal courtyards on the ground floor with a double height courtyard including a tree that stretches through the centre of the building acting as a common focal point.

Environmental Strategies

Initial Site Plans

Initial designs include a ground floor plan connected by shared spaces with an external 'wall' that stretches along the entire front of the site to create a continuation between all 3 houses. Overhanging, rotated 'boxes' on the first floor would then allow for individuality in each design and make use of different views. The ground floors are angled to the South to make use of solar heat gain whilst allowing sufficient parking space to the front and a communal garden to the back.

The design includes environmental strategies with overhangs and box windows that allow passive solar heat gain in winter and solar shading in summer. A double height space allows for for stack ventilation.

An external staircase envelops the building with carefully planned windows that face specific views including the city centre.
