Sheffield Interchange

This project is a live project with the Combined Mayoral Office of South Yorkshire. The goal is to develop the existing Sheffield Interchange to create a more active, useful and desirable place for people to use and visit. The project is to include an urban strategy that extends past the site in the aim of increasing footfall. â€‹

In my design I have regenerated the existing Interchange and included a central Wintergarden and green park which will act as the new heart of the Interchange and create new internal views throughout the entire site. Ramped bridges, user accessible intensive green roofs and 2 new circular hubs connect the Interchange and all surrounding streets together to create a safe environment that is accessible by all without effecting the existing bus routes. The central Wintergarden contains market stalls that encourage new cultural experiences with a diverse range of food and items. This experience extends out into the park which is the main place for larger markets and events.

Large amounts of nature envelopes the new Interchange to bring new biodiversity and create a much needed softer space in a current harsh and cold environment with towering buildings that surround the site. My design works with 2 of the current shelters and the main Interchange quadrant by retrofitting the buildings to create a more practical environment with increased active frontage to create more interactive spaces which people want to use. New frames, bridges and accessible roofs are then built over the existing elements to create improved movement between the spaces and increase safety. Reusing these buildings helps to cut down on embodied energy and construction time by reducing the amount of new materials and construction projects.

Wintergarden Section

The Wintergarden is made up of 3 floors with the top floor split between inside and outside. A sloped roof with user access faces South making use of the uninterrupted views over the city and the midday sun. A central void creates visual connections between the floors and helps with stack ventilation. 5 food stalls on the ground floor forms the heart of the space and stretches out into the Park.
