Intergenerational Learning Centre

This project was to create a community led Intergenerational Learning Centre on the Katendrecht dock in Rotterdam.

My design contains an open floor plan with strong visual links throughout to achieve a continuous flow around the building in the aim of encouraging social interaction. The library makes use of stunning dock views and is focused around an indoor/ outdoor stage that becomes the centre for performances and entertainment events that bring multiple generations together. A central double height greenhouse seamlessly connects the library and day nursery to create a space for eating and cooking with easy access to the communal growing garden to the East used to encourage local healthy habits. Appropriately sized steps in the library and day nursery provide seating and spaces for activity whilst creating a continuous flow between all floors.

All sections of the building open onto a secure nursery garden in the centre of the plan which acts as a common focal point and creates an unobstructed view through the entire building.

Calculated overhangs and recessed balconies combined with louvred systems maximises solar heat gain in winter and creates solar shading in summer. Passive systems including natural ventilation and rainwater harvesting combined with active systems including a GSHP, photovoltaics and underfloor heating all help to create an efficient, low energy consumption building. A glulam frame, high-tech thermal mass and eco-materials all contribute to a low embodied energy design .
